A Message from The Executive Director

Our Mission

Volume 1, Issue 4  7/20/05

Summer in Oregon is a wonderful time.  A transformation seems to happen right before one’s eyes.  Those huddled in coffee shops looking for respite from the rain, begin to come to life as they walk the streets carrying their iced coffee, enjoying the newness that the sunshine seems to bring to their soul.  Tops come off cars even when at times the temperature hasn't yet reached sixty degrees.  It feels like a new life is beginning, a whole summer to look forward to without rain.  This is similar to the impact that Misty Mountain’s ministry is having on people’s lives.  I remember the first time I met Susan (actual name changed).  She began counseling with a dark cloud over her.  She had a lot of rain in her life and storms that seem to follow her where ever she went.  She had been using Methamphetamine, had recently had an abortion, and was in a very destructive relationship.  Through committing herself to counseling, and allowing God to change her heart, she was able to begin to walk away from the cloud of darkness and begin seeing light and a new start to her life.  She now has a job and is off drugs and is continuing counseling.  What a joy it is to see lives changed through Misty Mountain’s ministry.  When I saw Susan recently, her smile was as radiant as the bright sun on a summer day in Oregon.  Just as God gives us the beauty of a summer day, he gives light and hope of changed lives.  That’s what Misty Mountain is about: Changing lives!  I look forward to hearing from you.  Have a wonderful summer!

Text Box: Exciting Things Happening

· Greg Hasek recently co lead a workshop at the National Right to Life Conference in Minneapolis on the topic of Lost Fatherhood: The Male Response to Abortion.

· Misty Mountain began providing support groups for Family Caregivers for the first time this month.  The groups are contracted through Washington County Disability and Aging Services. www.co.washington.or.us/aging   We are excited to be now running 5 support groups throughout Washington County.  We are also providing additional services such as individual counseling to caregivers when needed.

· Misty Mountain organized and sponsored the first ever Men’s Summit in Kansas City in July.  The Men’s Summit brought together men and women leaders who have had a heart for reaching post abortive men since 1973.  The goal of the summit was to begin to address how to reach the pre and post abortive men in new and effective ways.  Plans are under way to hold a larger conference next year.

· We are blessed to have a new employee this month.  Her name is Anna Fields.  She is a recent graduate from Western Seminary's counseling program.  Anna is a wonderful addition to our ministry!

Misty Mountain continues to expand it’s outreach to the community as part of it’s mission.  We believe that often the issues we are addressing cause division whether politically or theologically. That is not our intention.  Our intention is to connect and reach out to the community with objective facts and compassion for the hurting.  It is also our hope to work closely with the local church to create a community of healing and restoration.  Based upon statistics, 1/3 of men in the Christian church struggle with pornography.  In addition about 40% of men and women who attend church are post abortive.  That means that over 50% of the church may also be suffering spiritually and impotent in their ability to experience authentic transformation, as a result of shame brought on by these issues.  The church must address these issues if we are to expect those inside of the church to look any different than those outside.  We are excited about some new church outreach programs and partnerships we are developing.  We will tell you more about this in the next newsletter.
